After many years of riding SPD pedals, I made the switch to platform pedals. I was riding a touring bike, mostly on roads and some bike paths. My new bike is a Surly ECR, and my intentions are to ride more off road and back roads. I wanted to be able to hike right off the bike and be able to come off the pedals quickly while on trails. I am not experienced in mountain biking and I think platforms are a better choice right now. I went with Race Face Chester pedals for several reasons. First was the reviews. They got great reviews. Then was the price, only about $55. Not knowing if I was going to hate platforms, I didn't want to spend a lot of money. Lastly, they are rebuild able. After a couple of weeks of riding, I can say I am glad I went to Chester pedals. I had no issue with my
foot
slipping off even when caked in mud. In fact,
my foot was catching when stepping off,
because I was trying to turn heel out. Muscle memory I guess, from SPD'S. I haven't had any soreness in the bottom
of my feet, the platform
is huge. Only big difference is taking off in traffic. With SPD'S I could take off a lot faster and get up to speed faster. I think this is just a learning curve with platforms. In the end, I am glad I went to the Race Face Chester and one day might upgrade to the Aeffect
or Atlas.
